Perhaps implausibly, I wrote this song over 40 years ago. It was during the final year of Wheatstraw’s tenure in Boston and I’d begun work on a “concept album”, a series of songs that collectively would tell a longer story, in this case about a country boy who comes to the city. He’s at first bewildered, begins to think he’s got the hang of it, then has to eventually choose between the temptations of the city and some core values he was raised on.
